tv   The Real Story With Gretchen Carlson  FOX News  May 2, 2014 11:00am-12:01pm PDT

11:00 am
and seen great sights under water. but nothing like that picture you just had up. >> imagine how quickly you'd lose your oxygen. >> the old gold brick on the ocean floor. thank you for joining us today. >> my pleasure. "the real story" with gretchen carlson starts right now. we begin with a fox news alert today because as you've heard in the last few hours, speaker of the house john boehner has issued now his request for a select committee to look into and investigate benghazi. at the same time, that committee has also issued a subpoena to secretary of state john kerry. many developments going on at this hour, compelling him to appear and give his sworn testimony on benghazi. that committee accusing the state department of hiding documents after finding out about an e-mail that was withheld until a lawsuit forced it to be handed over. a former white house official now saying it should have been released a lot sooner. >> why did it take a foia and a
11:01 am
judge to get this ben rhodes e-mail? >> i don't know. i bet every person in that white house wished the e-mail would have been released earlier. i do, too, it tells us what we said privately is what we said publicly because that's what we thought occurred. it references protests because they were countless across the world. >> mark mad does eadows is on t committee. i'm assuming you agree that this select committee should go forward? >> certainly, at this point to have a real robust investigatioinvestigation that focuses just on benghazi is what we need to do. i'm behind our leadership as they've made the call to vote for this select committee. >> what did you make of that interview that we just heard a snippet of with bret baier, the former nsa communications spokesperson, being relatively smug, admitting that obama was not in the situation room when all this was going down in benghazi. you would say what to that? >> well, that's very troubling,
11:02 am
when we have american lives that have been lost and you're not there in the situation room. it's very troubling because if you're truly wanting to make sure that additional lives were not lost, you've got to be there as our commander in chief. that's what the american people expect. >> to me, it comes down to these two issues -- did anybody deliberately change the talking points, how far up did that go? we know there was that specific e-mail from at least one person inside the white house. and number two, was there a failed attempt to go and try and save american lives in benghazi? >> well, it's those two questions as well as a number of others that we've got to get to the bottom of. that's why a select committee is so key at this point. but the other is, is that when you see an e-mail surface -- and we have jay carney saying, el with, he's not so sure that it should have been released, surely the spokesman for the white house doesn't get to make that decision.
11:03 am
we need to make sure that all the documents are released so the american people can get to the truth and now is the time to do that. >> one other important thing about this select committee is that you won't just have one person testifying one at a time. so for example, you might have general petraeus setting next to former secretary of state hillary clinton, correct? >> well, i think that's the key. we start to look at this as bringing all the pieces together. we've had a number of hearings both on foreign affairs and ogr and a lot of differecommittees. this brings it together, focuses in and brings justice. that's what the american people want. we want justice and now's the time to do that. >> so what do you see as far as timing? when is this going to happen? >> certainly that is unfolding as we speak. and when the actual vote will happen in the house, i know that leadership is discussing that now. i expect it to be sooner than later. as we see that, bringing together committees and staff to go ahead and focus on that,
11:04 am
simultaneously, though, the subpoena for secretary kerry will go ahead. so hopefully we'll get a little bit more truth by may 21st when he's required to testify. >> congressman mark meadows, north carolina, thank you for your time today. now for more on the select committee, let's go to catherine herridge who's live in washington with the breaking details on that. why will a select committee make more of a difference than the five congressional committees we've seen so far? >> a sleeelect committee brings together members of the house committees with jurisdiction, in this case, the house intelligence committee, foreign affairs, armed services and oversight. they do formal depositions in this case. not the five-minute question-and-answer sessions we saw earlier this week with retired general lovell. you mentioned a select committee because it crosses all jurisdictions, could have at the same table former secretary of state hillary clinton and next to her, the former cia director
11:05 am
david petraeus who remains under investigation. the question really is what was this week's tipping point? the house speaker's statement strongly hints that it was these new documents from judicial watch that lead directly into the white house. the statement reads in part, quote, the administration's withholding of documents, e-mails showing greater white house involvement and misleading the american people is a flagrant violation of trust and undermines the basic principles of oversight, upon which our system of government is built. we also understand that fox news' recent reporting on the d.c. consulting firm beacon global strategies was of particular interest to the house leadership. fox showed that so many key players in the benghazi scandal are now employed by a firm friendly to mrs. clinton. >> interesting. what has the response been so
11:06 am
far? >> the spokesperson for the house minority leader nancy pelosi said today they that had not been contacted directly by the speaker's office. but she seemed to dismiss the significance of the scandal yesterday. >> diversion subterfuge, benghazi, benghazi, benghazi. why aren't we talking about something else? what i know of what i've read in the press about those e-mails were very consistent with what was put out there before. i don't think there's anything new there. >> there's some logistical issues that have to be dealt with for a select committee to go forward. over 180 members of congress have signed on so far for that resolution that was first tabled by republican congressman frank wolf. and there are practical things like finding office space and selecting the staff. but you could have a select committee voted in, if you will, or passed as early as next week.
11:07 am
>> catherine herridge, thanks for your reporting. charles krauthammer changing his tune on benghazi after these revolutions. he recently said republicans were getting nowhere on the issue and should drop their investigation. >> to me, the equivalent of what was discovered with the nixon tapes. the point is that republicans have done a terrible job in building the case. even today i have to say the questioning was disjointed. it was not organized. if they had appointed a special committee a long time ago the way it was done in watergate, we would have had answers on this and the country wouldn't be tired. >> now we do have that select committee. alan colmes, mike gallagher both join me, both fox news contributors. mike, the day is here. >> it's a big deal. it's a very big deal. i don't know how many ways
11:08 am
democrats can continue to try to minimize it. look at the week we've had. we have the one former spokesman saying, it was two years ago, who cares -- >> dude. >> dude. you have nancy pelosi saying, this is a subterfuge. that's exactly what this is about, madam pelosi. you have jay carney pretending an e-mail about benghazi wasn't about benghazi. i think the closer we get to a committee and a true investigation, the more desperate the democrats are becoming. i know my friend on the left is going to argue this as a political component. there is a political component about hillary on the horizon. that doesn't negate the fact that these men died and apparently the white house seems to have orchestrated a cover-up about the circumstances -- >> the spokesman was referring to the talking points, the memo. he didn't say, dude, the people who died 2 1/2 years ago and nobody cares --
11:09 am
>> he was very smug for someone so serious. >> she wasn't talking about that. he was talking about the memo. >> i'm going to change my name to benghazi so republicans never stop talking about me. this is a partisan witch hunt. >> even now with the select committee -- >> the republican head of the armed services committee said that robert lovell who was testifying didn't know what he was talking about because he was in germany at the time. >> alan? >> you don't think that members of congress will find out more information now that you can have general petraeus and hillary clinton sitting next to each other -- >> how many more investigations -- do you know in the bush administration, i know you hate when i bring up bush -- after 9/11, there were 13 different attacks at embassies and consulates resulting in hundreds of deaths. i didn't hear a word about this. why is there a double standard about this president? >> you shouldn't be afraid of the truth. and if this investigation, this
11:10 am
select committee can uncover the truth, then you should welcome it and let the chips fall where they may. listen, krauthammer is right. think about the people that went to jail over covering up a third-rate burglary at the watergate building in washington, d.c. four people died. it's a very big deal. >> benghazi is a tragedy, it's not a scandal. >> oh, it's a scandal. >> when we learn more information with the select committee. extreme weather has wreaked havoc over the u.s. the past few days. residents in the florida panhandle cleaning up. tuesday, believe it or not, was the single rainiest day on record in pensacola. floods devastating much of the area, forcing hundreds of rescues. let's go out to southern california. wildfires there are the problem.
11:11 am
rancho kocucamongo wildfire is % contained. now the severe weather is moving out and making way for a beautiful weekend. rick reichmuth is live outside in new york city with the forecast. >> yeah, final le it's beautiful. a lot of people will be happy to hear that. but what a rough week. think about the tropical storms that go through florida and you look at the video from the rain. that's a place that gets a lot of rain. and you wouldn't normally imagine that you would see as much destruction as you did from this. but if you have your wettest day ever, even with the tropical storms and hurricanes that go through there, this is the type of damage that's done with that. that's pensacola. there's a little more rain to fall across florida this weekend. go out across the west, into california, we did not talk that much about this. but that fire out there burned over 2,000 acres. it's 53% contained.
11:12 am
that's great news. california dealing with the worst drought they've ever had. they had temperatures into the upper 90s. those kinds of high temperatures this early in the season after a very dry winter and the drought does not portend to a very good season for them. look at your temperatures today across that area. still triple digits. you cool down a little bit. but the heat has to go somewhere. so it's going into the southern plains. get ready for triple digits in parts of oklahoma and texas. the heat will be somewhere. >> i thought you actually just suffered from heatstroke. you called me greta. how many years have i known you, rick? >> a lot of years. gretchen, gretchen, gretchen. >> all right, rob, great to see you! it looks like something out of a disaster movie. that twister barreling towards an office building. where this happened and the damage that it caused. plus, breaking news in the investigation into dozens of

11:17 am
dr. katherine mitchell saying she and a colleague rescued subpoenaed evidence after learning about plans to shred it. the longtime v.a. employee saying she shared concerns about patient care with the hospital's director two years ago. that woman on your screen, sharon helman, now on administrative leave. here's the whistle-blower. >> there was a perfect storm in the e.r. and i was afraid a patient would die because i did not have the resources. she asked me how things were going. i told her unless we had additional staffing, unless we had additional ancillary services and other resources that the e.r. was too dangerous to continue and we should be shut down immediately. >> amber barno is the spokesperson and she joins me. we have another physician coming forward.
11:18 am
i don't know what's more shocking, that she felt like the emergency room wasn't doing well enough to continue functioning or that they stopped subpoenaed documents from being shredded. >> yeah. this really demonstrates the deep systemic issues at the v.a. and why it's failing. employees are literally having to work in an environment of fear and intimidation on a daily basis. if they speak out about some of these unethical issues, that there will be retaliation. katherine mitchell, the most recent whistle-blower, even says this e.r. should be shut down. and she said what came back to her was they said the only problem here was her communication skills. that's absolutely unacceptable that the v.a. is that willing to shift the blame from a very prominent issue and turn it back on the person that brings light to it. >> i'll tell you one thing, if somebody was going to destroy documents or they did destroy them after they had been subpoenaed -- i think we're
11:19 am
talking about that secret waiting list where the allegations are that 40 vets died because they were put on that list. if those documents were destroyed, this is serious criminal activity. >> it really is. it shows deceit at the higher management levels where they essentially think they're above the rules and above the law. but this really demonstrates the deeper issue within the v.a. this isn't just an issue in phoenix. there are issues popping up all over the country. and that's something that needs to be brought to light. it took them a week longer to put forth that those documents weren't supposed to be shredded -- >> what do you think about this, shinseki has come out with this statement -- we take these allegations seriously based on the request of the independent v.a. office of inspector general, in view of the gravity of the allegations.
11:20 am
i have directed that the director, sharon helman and others are now on administrative leave. some people would say, about time. >> about time. but it's a very diplomatic answer. we don't know if those three employees are on administrative leave with pay. >> exactly. >> but if it's anything like previous v.a. scandals, they're most likely going to be paid, some receive bonuses. it's essentially like taking a vacation. but secretary shinseki is far from free of blame in this case. he's essentially failing america's veterans. >> and we heard complaints out of florida from the governor there yesterday as well. we'll stay on this story. amber, thank you. breaking developments on benghazi. house republicans announcing a select committee on the investigation into the terror attack and how the white house handled it. plus, chaos in the street as may day protests get out of control in one city. and from president to

from house lawmakers for secretary of state john kerry to testify about benghazi. but they are saying that he will be out of town. no reaction yet from the white house, which has been playing defense since the new e-mails about the talking points surfaced this week. chief white house correspondent ed henry live at the white house. ed, sounds like the heat is being turned up on the president and the administration. >> no doubt about it. you mentioned secretary kerry, i'll get to him in a moment. the president himself, though, obviously not going to be pleased here at the white house that house republicans now deciding to move forward with this select committee to investigate benghazi. they've been frustrated with all the questions they've been getting in the white house briefing room this week. you know that speaker john boehner moving forward here is a big deal because he's previously pushed back on calls by his fellow republicans to move forward with this special committee. why would you do a special committee? you can consolidate instead of having several committees, putting out subpoenas, having hearings and not coordinating it, there's been an argument on the republican side it would be good to have one committee focus

in on it. a quote from eric cantor, the house majority leader, who's been pushing for this a long time says, quote, in the days after four americans were killed by terrorists, president obama's advisers organize straited a campaign to deceive their fellow americans as to what occurred and we deserve to know why. that from eric cantor, the house majority leader. you mentioned the subpoena for secretary of state john kerry to testify, a subpoena because they want to clarify why this e-mail from ben rhodes was not sent over by the state department and the administration. marie harf says the secretary is scheduled to be in mexico, unlikely to appear. they're frustrated because they said, they didn't get an invite to speak. maybe kerry would have agreed on his own to do it. here's marie harf on why she thinks there should not be a

special committee. >> i'm confident what the republicans allege, that there was some attempt by this administration to cover up or spin what happened is 100% false. >> republicans obviously disagree. and we're told by speaker boehner's aides the reason why he changed his mind in the last day or two about having a special committee is that he now thinks this rhodes e-mail coming out which republicans believe should have come out months ago to comply with a previous republican subpoena, that convinced him that the administration is not cooperating with congress. so boehner decided to move ahead on this front. >> interesting. we don't find it that surprising. but it's interesting that not a single benghazi question was asked at the presser today with angela merkel and president obama. >> well, sure. i've been to enough of these events where there's always a mix of questions out there. you have jobs numbers out on the economy today. health care has been a big subject. and when you're there with angela merkel, it's not surprising the first question from the u.s. press was about

ukraine and sanctions against russia. that's something she's been front and center on. the second question was about the death penalty and that botched execution in oklahoma. this benghazi story obviously has been out there, front and center for several days. several networks, news organizations pressing jay carney that something as big as that -- especially since john boehner announced the special committee minutes before the news conference. you thought you'd get some questions on that. back to you, greta. >> oh! >> i know the difference. >> no problem, fred. see you. the families of those who lost loved ones in benghazi reacting to the white house narrative, as well as that dramatic testimony from the military's top intelligence official at the time of the attack. listen to that part of that testimony. >> did they ever tell you to go

general plus other people that the ambassador was tortured, slashed, murdered before being taken into a hospital in benghazi. is this true? was he killed like that? and why hasn't it been known? along with all the other things that haven't been let out and known to the general public. >> pat, what do you make of the fact as well as that testimony yesterday, the revelation in the last 48 hours that there was this e-mail from somebody on the white house staff about the talking points? and it seems to many and most that it was to tell susan rice when she went on those sunday talk shows to blame the videotape. i know you had heard that blame before from hillary clinton, right? >> i heard it from hillary, from obama, from panetta, from biden,
11:38 am
from susan, all of them at the ceremony -- at the coffin ceremony. they all told me within inches of my face that it was the video -- it was because of the video. and everybody knows that that is not the truth. why did they have to lie? why? why is my government lying to me? >> well, pat, i know -- >> i don't know. i don't know what to believe. >> i know that on that day at the coffin ceremony when you were told that, you were also told by those high-ranking individuals that they would get to the bottom of it and that they would get back in touch with you and tell you what they found out. and have they ever contacted you? >> not one of them has ever contacted me. not one of them has ever tried to contact me. in fact, what they did indicate to me -- and i have this in writing -- is that i do not
11:39 am
deserve to know since i'm not a member of the immediate family. >> even though you are the mother of shawn smith, one of the four killed that night. how could you not possibly be part of the immediately family? >> i kept asking them that. and they would not even answer that. they do not want to answer what they do not feel that they should answer -- >> pat -- >> reasons about being quiet about everything, they made terrible decisions. and i mean hillary clinton made terrible decisions about this. and she will not stand up to what she said and what she did. why can't she do that? why can't she tell the truth about something, anything? >> she did testify before and now it looks like many of those main players will be called back to testify once again with each other in front of this select committee. it's a big development in this case. pat, we're thinking about you and we hope that you will get answers about what happened to your son on that night.pe so. i hope so.
